Italian wines are some of the best in the world.
They can also be some of the most expensive in the world. However, we all know I’m always on the hunt for a affordable and delicious wine and I just so happen to be introduced to one I think you’re going to love.
Aia Vecchia is a winery in Tuscany that produces these beautifully complex and delicious wines I mentioned. I’ve tried three out of the five wines made at Aia Vecchia and they have something to please everyone. (They even make a rosé so you know I’m all about this place). Their 104 acres of vineyards are split between two estates in Bolgheri and Maremma Grossetana. The Bolgheri region is known from producing high quality wines and the Pellegrini family has been doing it for four generations.
The most unique thing about the Pellegrini family is that they are native to Bolgheri. All of the other wine makers in the area moved there from other areas, but the Pellegrini’s have been there from the beginning.
The three wines that I’ve had the pleasure of tasting were the Vermentino, the Lagone and the Sor Ugo. Check out my thoughts below.
First up is this fantastic white wine composed of 95% Vermentino grapes and 5% Viognier. It is aged in stainless steal tanks for 4 months and then for 2 months in the bottle. The grapes are grown on the coast which allows the salty breeze to interact with the grapes which gave this wine a minerally taste which was pleasant.
Aia Vecchia’s Lagone was my favorite wine of the day. It’s a awesome combination of mostly Merlot grapes (60%) with 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. The color of the Lagone is deep red and has a touch of purple to it. It was extremely smooth and flavorful, without being harsh. It’s a unique red in that it would pair nicely with any type of food (I had it with a chicken, bacon and chanterelle combo. YAS).
The Sor Ugo is the most expensive wine Aia Vecchia sells. At $35 it may seem steep for my budget babes but it is completely worth it. Consider this your splurge bottle. It would be a great gift for the holidays. This Bolgheri Rosso Superior DOC is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grapes.
I got the opportunity to meet Elia and he really shares the same passion that his family four generations before him did about wine. These wines are available in every single state which means you have no excuse not to pick them up. When we spoke he really stressed the importance of having a good quality wine that was affordable and delicious and my friends, he has accomplished just that.
